Both are mineral-based suspended ceiling tiles and both can deliver Class A sound absorption.
They differ on fire classification, behaviour in humidity, weight and cost. We supply both!

If the space is dry, standard and cost-sensitive, mineral fibre usually wins. If there's humidity, wash-down, or fire classification under scrutiny, stone wool usually wins. 

What They're Actually Made Of

 

Stone wool is spun from volcanic rock - basalt melted and drawn into fibres, the same base material as ROCKWOOL insulation. There's no organic binder doing structural work, which is why it holds its shape and why it doesn't burn.

Mineral fibre tiles are made from recycled mineral wool and mineral content bound together, typically with organic binders such as starch. Those binders are what allow the wide range of surface textures and perforation patterns the category is known for - and they're also the reason the tiles behave differently in heat and moisture.

Both are mineral, both are non-organic in bulk, and both have been standard in UK commercial ceilings for decades. 

 

Stone Wool vs Mineral Fibre - Where the Difference Matters

Fire

Stone wool tiles are typically Euroclass A1 - non-combustible. Most mineral fibre tiles are A2-s1,d0: limited combustibility, very little smoke, no flaming droplets. A2-s1,d0 is compliant for most commercial work and isn't a safety problem - but where a specification calls for A1 specifically, only stone wool meets it. Check the product, not the category: Rockfon Mono Acoustic and the Universal Baffle are A2-s1,d0 too.

Humidity and sag

The clearest difference. Stone wool is stable to 100% relative humidity with no visible deflection and needs no acclimatisation on site. Standard mineral fibre has a stated RH limit and can sag over time - the wavy ceiling in an older leisure centre is almost always mineral fibre in the wrong place. Humidity-resistant mineral ranges exist and perform well; the failures come from standard tiles going into wet rooms to save money.

Largely a non-difference, and where most comparisons go wrong. Both reach Class A absorption in their better ranges, so specify on the published αw of the actual product, not the material. The distinction that does matter is absorption, which controls reverberation within a room, versus insulation, which stops sound crossing between rooms. A Class A tile alone won't give you speech privacy between offices.

Weight & Cost

Stone wool is generally heavier, so check the grid load class if you're swapping material in an existing ceiling. It's also dearer per square metre — the honest reason most standard commercial ceilings are mineral fibre, and a perfectly good one. Stone wool earns the difference in humid or fire-critical spaces. In a dry office it doesn't.

Which Should You Specify?

   Specify stone wool when:
  • The space has humidity, wash-down or condensation - pools, kitchens, changing rooms, plant rooms

  • A1 non-combustible is explicitly required by the specification, insurer or building control

  • The building is healthcare, cleanroom or food production

  • The ceiling needs to last the life of the building without being revisited

  • You want through-coloured tiles where cut edges match the face

 

   Specify mineral fibre when:
  • The space is dry, heated and standard - most offices, retail and classrooms

  • Budget is the deciding constraint and the performance requirement is ordinary

  • You need a specific texture, perforation pattern or tegular detail from a wider range

  • You're matching an existing mineral fibre ceiling and want a like-for-like finish

  • Weight is a constraint on the existing grid

Is stone wool better than mineral fibre?

Neither is better across the board. Stone wool has a higher fire classification and far better humidity stability. Mineral fibre is lighter, cheaper and comes in a wider range of textures and patterns. For a dry, standard commercial office, mineral fibre is usually the sensible specification. For humid, clinical or fire-critical spaces, stone wool is.
