Rockfon Stone Wool Suspended Ceilings, Baffles & Acoustic Islands

Rockfon products are made from stone wool - volcanic rock spun into fibres, the same base material as ROCKWOOL insulation. Rockfon is part of the ROCKWOOL Group. Stone wool gives the tiles a non-combustible core, high sound absorption, and dimensional stability up to 100% relative humidity.

Both are mineral-based, but stone wool is spun from volcanic rock while standard mineral fibre tiles are made from recycled mineral content bound with organic binders. In practice stone wool achieves a higher fire classification — most Rockfon tiles are Euroclass A1, meaning non-combustible — and holds its shape in humidity where mineral fibre can sag. Mineral fibre is usually the lower-cost option for dry, standard commercial spaces.

Most Rockfon stone wool tiles carry a Euroclass A1 reaction-to-fire classification, meaning non-combustible. Some products differ - Rockfon Mono Acoustic and the Universal Baffle are classified A2-s1,d0, as is Color-all in the Mercury shade. Yes. Rockfon tiles are stable up to 100% relative humidity with no visible deflection, so they resist the sagging that affects standard mineral fibre in wet or humid spaces. For wash-down and hygiene-critical areas, the CleanSpace and MediCare ranges add cleanable surfaces and chemical resistance.

For most Zentia and legacy Armstrong tiles there's a Rockfon equivalent on module size and edge detail that will drop into your existing grid. Performance may differ, because stone wool and mineral fibre behave differently - absorption, weight and fire classification can all change. An island (or raft) hangs horizontally, like a floating section of ceiling, and works well for defining a zone under an exposed soffit while still looking like a finished ceiling. A baffle hangs vertically, like a fin, and absorbs sound across a larger volume. Baffles generally deliver more absorption for the area of product used; islands generally look more architectural. Both suit spaces where a full suspended grid isn't wanted.

Sound absorption (measured as αw) controls reverberation within a room - it stops a space sounding echoey. Sound insulation (Dn,f,w) reduces sound passing between adjacent rooms over the top of a partition. A Class A absorbing tile does not automatically give you speech privacy between offices. For that you need a tile like Rockfon Sonar dB 43, which offers Dn,f,w of 43 dB alongside Class A absorption.
